A View From The Bridge Arthur Miller clearly uses different aspects of his play â€Å"A view from the bridge† to create dramatic tension. His central character Eddie is the person around who has a great deal of conflict revolving around him. He creates a lot of tensions and each scene of conflict becomes stronger than one before. He lives with his wife and her niece Catherine. Eddie is very protective of Catherine and wants her to get a good education. He also seems to be in love with Catherine but refuses to face this fact at any stage in the play even when Beatrice, his wife, points it out to him clearly. We also witness Eddie’s verbal conflict with all the characters at some point throughout the play. Other aspect is how the other characters feel concerned about him. There is a scene of unease as we see how Catherine and Beatrice are unsure about how he will react when he is told about Catherine’s job. As we understand Catherine is deeply influenced by Eddie and does everything he wants and Beatrice warns her not to act like a child in front of Eddie. The introduction of two foreign characters from Italy( Marco and Rodolpho) to this working class environment of New York creates a good deal of the conflict and tension in the play. Rodolpho is not married, good looking, lively and able to gain interest easily, in fact Catherine seems to have been immediately attracted to him. He dreams of being rich and returning to Italy with a monocycle. So Catherine falls in love with him and as soon as they begin to date Eddie gets very annoyed, as he is very possessive. When I was on vacation in San Francisco, the 19:29 Theater Company from London put on the play Blasted, by Sarah Kane.   I knew very little about Kane or her work, but went with a few friends on Monday, June 23.   The play was taking place at the Mossmer Hotel, and we decided to go to the early showing.   Upon hearing people talk about it and seeing some posters, I got a better idea about the kind of experimental play I was about to see.   However, I had no idea what I was getting into, and the experience far exceeded my wildest imaginations and the unconventional nature of this play would stay with me long after the final line was spoken.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   When we were about to enter the theater, some people were handing out veils to all the audience members with holes cut out for mouths and eyes.   This was interesting at first, but the festive atmosphere created by the initial strangeness of the veils soon gave way to a creeping fear of something heavy about to be parlayed.   We were in essence walking as if to a firing squad, some of us cognizant of what was about to happen, while some of us still laughed at the novelty and the seriousness of the situation.   As soon as the play began, no one was laughing. Blasted is set in a naturally lit hotel room, with a bed and some furniture and a bathroom that permeated a blue glow.   No programs were given out and the play just began very unceremoniously.   The actor and actress in the hotel room began their dialogue in a style that was very naturalistic and conversational.   The characters are called â€Å"Ian† and â€Å"Cate,† with Ian an older man and Cate a younger woman.   Ian just swears and speaks racists and bigoted tirades, while Cate seems to shrink from him.   Ian tries to get Cate to make love, but she refuses.   After several attempts and severe stages awkwardness, the scene ends to the sound of rain.    The next scene begins the next day after Ian raped Cate.   After a bit, Cate breaks free from Ian out the bathroom window.   Soon after, a soldier runs into the room and a bomb hits it, leaving the scene to end to the sound of rain.   When the next scene begins, the room is virtually destroyed and there is a large hole in the wall.   The stage is much darker and the light is very sparse.   The soldier explains to Ian about the war going on and the terrible things he has witnessed.   The sound of gunfire can be heard continuously. The soldier then rapes Ian and blinds him, and like the other scenes it ends with the sound of rain.   During the next scene, Ian is blind and the soldier has killed himself, and Cate returns carrying a dead baby.   She describes what she has seen and buries the baby under a hole the floor before leaving.   The final scene shows Ian slowly deteriorating into madness and despair.   Starving, he crawls into the hole where Cate put the dead baby and eats it.   A voice offstage then says that Ian dies, and the play ends with Cate coming back with some food that she got by having sex with a soldier.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   During the play I was simply shocked by the turns it took, as well as the bleakness of what was being portrayed on stage.   Even with actors that may not be the most schooled in theater, the material is so deep and disturbing, and the production is tight, that it almost becomes the perfect play.   It certainly stayed with me long after I saw it, and provoked everything but indifference from everyone that saw it.   I like to think that I had a good idea about what Kane was trying to say, but when it comes down to it, I can only guess that her greater message was that life is absurd.   The violence, perversion, and general human degradation she portrayed in Blasted certainly speaks of the darker side of humanity, but one that certainly exists and seems all too common in much of the world. Blasted was Sarah Kane’s breakthrough play, and her emergence put the theatre world on its ear in the 1990s.   More than any other recent theatrical event, the plays of Kane shocked the theatre world to the core.   Kane’s debut play, Blasted, created a scandal when it was released.   The play angered many of the critics, but cemented a lasting impression on the world of theatre.   According to playwright Mark Ravenhill: â€Å"History has made Kane’s critics look rather foolish.   But, really, who could have said then that Blasted was a landmark in theatre?   In retrospect, we – theatres, audiences, translators, teachers, students, biographers – pick out the good art from the bad until we’re left with some kind of canon. But in the moment no one can really tell† (Ravenhill).   Its scenes of anal rape, cannibalism, and brutality created the biggest theatre scandal since the baby stoning scene in Bond’s play Saved; Kane admired Bond’s work and he in turn publicly defended Kane’s play and talent (â€Å"Sarah Kane†).   Blasted’s merits were recognised by fellow playwright Harold Pinter and it was later generally accepted that the play is not an adolescent attempt to shock, but instead draws parallels between acts of domestic abuse and the war being fought in Bosnia, between emotional and physical violence, and thus confronts audiences with moral challenges rather than amoral shock tactics (â€Å"Sarah Kane†). Kane’s subsequent plays continued to deal with violent sexual desire, cruelty, pain, torture, and death, though without the massive scandal caused by her first play.   She measured human suffering through physical and psychological means, and presented theatre that might be offensive and difficult to watch at times, but overall redemptive. Her suicide stigmatized her films, but her work continues to transcend theatrical boundaries and national borders.   Theater critic Michael Billington remarked on the success of Kane’s plays around the world:   â€Å"If we still find it hard to grasp her in Britain, it is because of her ruthlessly uncompromising vision and total rejection of our naturalistic inheritance. This character is not a living breathing being. When an author writes of the experiences of a character within the fictional world, it is truly focused upon the understanding of experiences that the author can imagine. By a slave being entered it was similar to a bet being placed, with a small fee for entry paid to the games master, the fee also gave slaves the privilege of a weapon of choice. At the conclusion of the battle if the monster was the last one standing, the games master would keep the majority of the winnings, otherwise if a slave was the victor; their master was granted higher standing in society and a large sum of gold as their winnings. There was also an unspoken tradition, that the victorious slave was granted freedom for their heroic deeds performed within the arena. The ‘do nated’ slaves on the other hand, were the unwanted outcasts of rich society that the Games Keeper bought for a small fee, to â€Å"liven up the games† as he would call it.

Everyone is involved in the decision making process, and family time holds us closely together. I am proud of my accomplishments as a parent, wife, and graduate student, and I encourage my children to hold people such as Oprah Winfrey in high regard. Role of Women in Beowulf As an epic tale of heroes and monsters, Beowulf gives its readers much excitement and adventure, but Beowulf's importance is more than just literary. It offers many insights into the beliefs and customs of seventh-century Anglo-Saxon culture. Among these insights is the Anglo-Saxon view of women and their role in society. Good Anglo-Saxon women are peaceful and unassertive, greeting guests and serving drinks to the warriors and other men in the meadhall. Wealhtheow, the queen of the Danes, represents a typical subservient Anglo-Saxon woman. As a foil to Wealhtheow, Grendel's mother is a strong and combative monster whom Beowulf must kill. By analyzing these two characters in Beowulf, we can understand the treatment and mistreatment of women in Anglo-Saxon society. The author of Beowulf generally supports the traditional Anglo-Saxon views of women by praising Wealhtheow, condemning Grendel's mother, and showing the need to suppress feminine forces like Wyrd; however, he does offer som e criticism of these views by creating sympathy for Grendel's mother, allowing Wealhtheow to assert herself in the interest of her husband and children, and revealing masculine fear of feminine power. The author creates Wealhtheow to embody the role of a traditional Anglo-Saxon woman, and he presents this role as the only appropriate one for Wealhtheow to fulfill. She serves as a peacekeeper in the ever-tumultuous Heorot meadhall. When the author first introduces Wealhtheow to his audience, she immediately falls into her role as peaceful greeter and cocktail waitress. The author writes, "Then Wealhtheow came forth / folk-queen of the Danes daughter of Helmingas / and Hrothgar's bedmate. She hailed all of them / spo... ...st darkness" (l. 73) to restore peace and order. Wyrd works to bring disorder and doom to Beowulf and the warriors of Heorot, just as Grendel's mother wages her war of destruction and death on Hrothgar and his kingdom. Beowulf subdues Grendel's mother permanently by killing her, but Wyrd can only be avoided temporarily, not destroyed once and for all. This suggests that the struggle against female authority and uprising is timeless, and the only way to deal with this problem is on an individual basis. The author's views on women may never be fully revealed, but it is clear that he believes in male superiority and that insurgent females ought to be suppressed. Her life and political career lead her to this achievement. Emily Gowan Ferguson was born on March 14, 1868 in a village of Cookstown. It was Uncle Thomas who was a politician and who influenced Emily's interest in politics. At fifteen Emily moved to Toronto and attended the Bishop Strachan School for Girls. Emily married Reverend Arthur Murphy in 1887 in Anglican church of St. John's in Cookstown and in 1904 she and her husband moved to Winnipeg. Mrs. Murphy "conducted the literary section of the Winnipeg Tribune for a few years before moving to Alberta in 1907." In her new home Emily became very active in civic affairs especially in law that would improve the rights of women and children. In 1900's in Alberta any man who, for example, had a farm and was married could sell that farm and leave his wife and children walking away with the money. Mrs. Murphy was angry that Alberta would allow such disgrace. In 1910 Emily was still fighting for the Dower Act "which would recognize a married woman's entitlement to a share of the common property in a marriage". For the first time the act was turned down, Emily not giving up tried very hard until 1911 when Dower Act was passed. Blake's ‘The Garden of Love' functions as a criticism upon organised religion, poignantly reflecting on its capacity to replace humanity's innocent joys with rules and empty routines. Stanza 1 The name ‘Garden of Love' almost appears hackneyed through its traditional, Edenic connotations. It is a representation of innocence, with green, open spaces often being associated with childhood in Blake's poetry. The speaker comments that they saw â€Å"what [they] never had seen†, which seems to imply that something material has changed external to themselves, namely the altered landscape that is subsequently detailed; however, this poem, in the context of the ‘Songs of Innocence and Experience', symbolises an internal fall from innocence, and it is therefore only the speaker's perspective that has changed. The Church is then introduced as the object of the poet's condemnation, represented through the synecdoche of the â€Å"Chapel†. It is built â€Å"in the midst†, implying that organised religion is central to the corruption that infected the zeitgeist of the late 18th century. Furthermore, the aural suggestion of ‘mist' subtly evokes a somewhat disquieting image of the Chapel being shrouded in vapour, which is often a symbol of materialism in Blake and could therefore imply a preoccupation with wealth in Christianity. This contrasts with the â€Å"green†, a representation of childhood, where the speaker used to â€Å"play†, a verb with similar connotations. Stanza 2 The gates of the chapel are said to be â€Å"shut†, suggesting that the religiosity of the Church is an exclusive privilege. Indeed, Blake was very critical of an institution which effectively heralds its clergy as closer to God than ordinary worshippers; in his eyes, every human is equal before the natural order. He extends his condemnation to the Old Testament in the subsequent line, commenting that â€Å"Thou shalt not† was â€Å"writ over the door†. This is an allusion to the Ten Commandments, which Blake deemed to be overly regulatory; he instead put his faith into the New Testament, which conversely advises humanity as to how it should conduct itself, therefore placing a greater emphasis on free will. The speaker then â€Å"turn[s]† to the Garden of Love, unveiling a poignant tableau in which they realise that the green innocence of their youth, which â€Å"so many sweet flowers bore†, has become devastated beyond hope. The final stanza is extremely bleak, alluding to death through its evocation of â€Å"graves† and â€Å"tombstones†, which have now replaced the â€Å"flowers† of the speaker's youth. The poem ends with a rhyming couplet, whose swaying rhythm represents an endless cycle of innocence into experience, an idea reinforced by the use of language such as â€Å"rounds† and â€Å"briars†. The reference to priests confirms that this poem is an attack on organised religion, which has repressed our â€Å"joys and desires†.
